The Sustainable Development Center at Sohag University launched the first edition of its training program on Carbon Footprint Calculation and Reporting, targeting a number of university affiliates as well as representatives of civil society organizations. The program was held at the Quality Assurance Center on the university’s old campus.

Dr. Hassan El-Noumani, President of Sohag University, stated that the training program is organized within the framework of Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy, which represents a long-term national plan aimed at mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change while preserving the country’s economic growth and development through 2050.

He explained that the program was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to calculate the carbon footprint of institutions and organizations and prepare carbon footprint reports. These efforts contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and support the implementation of Egypt Vision 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Dr. Khaled Omran, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, explained that the training program consisted of 10 training hours delivered over two days. The program was attended by assistant lecturers from Sohag University, in addition to participants representing various governmental bodies, institutions, and private companies across Sohag Governorate.

He added that the program included four main training sessions covering all aspects of carbon footprint calculation and reporting. The sessions incorporated presentations, brainstorming activities, interactive discussions, case studies, and simulation exercises to enhance participants’ practical understanding.

Dr. Hamdy Hassanein, Director of the Sustainable Development Center, noted that carbon footprint assessment and carbon certification are currently implemented in Egypt on a voluntary basis. However, many institutions and organizations are proactively training their personnel in anticipation of these practices becoming mandatory in the near future.

He added that the program brought together representatives from the Water and Wastewater Company, the Digestive Disease Center, the Directorate of Education, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Affairs Department, and several private-sector companies operating in Sohag Governorate.

At the conclusion of the program, all participants were awarded accredited certificates recognizing their successful completion of the training.
