Dr. Hassan Al-Numani, President of Sohag University, attended the celebration organized by the Infection Control Unit at Sohag University Hospitals on the occasion of World Hand Hygiene Day, which is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing as a key measure in preventing infections within healthcare facilities.

In his speech, Dr. Al-Numani emphasized the university’s strong commitment to implementing infection control standards across its university hospitals. He noted that World Hand Hygiene Day serves as an annual opportunity to renew awareness of this simple yet vital health practice, which represents the first line of defense in protecting both patients and healthcare workers from infection transmission. He expressed his pride in the remarkable achievement of the Infection Control Unit, which earned second place nationally in epidemic disease surveillance among Egyptian university hospitals and was honored by the Supreme Council of University Hospitals. This recognition, he said, reflects the unit’s outstanding efforts in applying the highest standards of infection prevention and demonstrates that Sohag University Hospitals are staffed with highly qualified medical and administrative teams who exemplify excellence in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Magdy El-Qadi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, added that Sohag University Hospitals have witnessed significant progress in infection control policies thanks to teamwork and ongoing training for all medical staff. He explained that honoring outstanding teams aims to support excellence and motivate all employees to adhere to international standards of hygiene and safety.

Dr. Ahmed Kamal, Executive Director of the University Hospitals, noted that the Infection Control Unit has implemented numerous effective initiatives in recent months, which culminated in this recognition as a testament to the team’s dedication and commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy hospital environment.

Dr. Asmaa Gouda, Director of Quality Assurance and Infection Control, explained that the celebration included a presentation of the unit’s key achievements and the honoring of participating teams, including the nursing team recognized for excellence in the handwashing competition among intensive care departments, as well as the epidemic surveillance team that won second place nationally among university hospitals. The event also featured awareness lectures on the importance of hand hygiene and the World Health Organization’s 2025 theme: “Clean Hands Always, Gloves When Needed.” In addition, there were presentations on the main pillars of infection control and the challenges of implementing them in healthcare settings.

The event was attended by Dr. Mohamed Nasr El-Din Hamdoun, Dr. Hatem Ammar, and Dr. Khaled Abdel-Aal, Vice Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, along with a distinguished group of department heads, medical unit directors, hospital administrators, faculty members, and nursing staff from Sohag University Hospitals.
