Sohag University will celebrate World Environment Day 2025 by organizing an educational seminar titled “Ending Plastic Pollution”, accompanied by an exhibition showcasing plastic alternatives and recycled products. The event will be held on Tuesday, June 17, at the Glass Hall on the university’s old campus. It is organized by the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector in cooperation with the Center for Sustainable Development.

Dr. Hassan Al-Numani, President of Sohag University, stated that the university is keen to celebrate international occasions—particularly World Environment Day—which it observes annually to promote awareness of the need to protect the environment in all its elements and avoid practices that harm it. He noted that the United Nations’ 2025 theme for World Environment Day is “Ending Plastic Pollution.” Dr. Al-Numani emphasized that the university is taking serious steps to protect the environment and support community development in line with the directives and initiatives of Egypt’s political leadership. These efforts aim to raise awareness among university members and the surrounding community about the importance of using sustainable and healthy resources to reduce pollution and live in a clean, safe environment.

Dr. Khaled Omran, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, added that several preparatory meetings were held in anticipation of the seminar and exhibition. A specialized committee was formed to coordinate tasks and logistics. The seminar will highlight topics such as green entrepreneurship, sustainable innovation, and ways to encourage youth to engage in recycling plastic waste and transforming it into useful products.

Dr. Hamdy Hassanein, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, explained that the accompanying exhibition will feature a variety of eco-friendly and recycled products, including paper and woven bags, plant-based tableware and utensils, as well as artistic and decorative pieces. He noted that the exhibition aims to promote awareness of reducing plastic use, encouraging recycling, and adopting sustainable lifestyle practices to help protect the environment and its natural resources.
