The International University Sustainability Ranking Team at Sohag University held its preparatory meeting to apply for the 2025 UI GreenMetric ranking cycle. The meeting was attended by Dr. Khaled Omran, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Hamdy Hassanein, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and General Coordinator of the university’s ranking file; along with Dr. Emad Samouel and Dr. Asmaa Qadri, assistant coordinators, and members of the standards team. The meeting aimed to prepare and organize the required documentation for this year’s submission.

Dr. Hassan Al-Numani, President of Sohag University, emphasized the importance of maintaining the university’s top position, which it achieved among Egyptian and African universities in the 2024 cycle. He added that the university will continue to ensure that its campus remains clean and compliant with sustainability standards by reducing the use of polluting transportation, rationalizing energy and water consumption, preserving green spaces, lowering carbon emissions, minimizing noise, and ensuring the safe disposal of waste. He also highlighted the university’s ongoing efforts toward digital transformation to reduce paper use and expand renewable energy projects.

Dr. Khaled Omran explained that universities will be evaluated according to six main criteria: (1) Infrastructure and Buildings, (2) Energy and Climate Change, (3) Waste Management, (4) Water Management, (5) Transportation, and (6) Education and Research. He added that the university’s Center for Sustainable Development website will also be assessed to showcase Sohag University’s sustainable activities across various fields, as well as the aesthetic aspects of its campus and its green facilities. He noted that the university ranked 255th globally out of 1,475 universities from 95 countries in the previous cycle.

Dr. Hamdy Hassanein affirmed that the coordinators and committee members are exerting their utmost efforts to preserve this achievement and keep Sohag University at the forefront in Africa and Egypt. He stressed the importance of integrated collaboration among the university’s faculties and departments to provide accurate data and develop environmental initiatives that strengthen the university’s reputation as a leading sustainable institution.
