Dr. Hassan Al-Noamany, President of Sohag University, stated that the university has achieved a great success in reducing the carbon footprint and reducing carbon emissions, as well as electricity consumption, as the carbon footprint of each university employee reached 0.06 metric tons for a person, which is considered a major achievement, as the global safe limits are 4 metric tons/person.
The university president stressed that electricity consumption decreased from 103.52 kW/capita (in 2021) to 76.04 kW/capita (in 2024), a decrease of almost 26.55% (per capita) of the university’s total electricity consumption, explaining that the reason for reducing carbon emissions is the university’s application of Environmentally friendly standards, in terms of expanding green spaces, converting a number of cars to run on natural gas, in addition to rationalizing electricity consumption by purchasing highly efficient appliances that consume less electricity, replacing the ordinary lamps and bulbs with energy-saving types, in addition to preventing the vehicles with harmful emissions to get into the university, as special parking lots have been allocated for motorcycles outside the campus.
Dr. Hamdy Hassanein, Director of the University’s Center of Sustainable Development and General Coordinator of the University’s file for the international ranking of sustainable universities, pointed out that Sohag University is one of the first Egyptian universities which established a special center for sustainability out of its belief in the importance of creating a sustainable environment on the university campus.
