Dr. Hassan El-Nomany, President of Sohag University, announced that the university has begun preparations to participate in the new edition of the international sustainable universities ranking, UI GreenMetric 2026. This comes as part of the university’s commitment to strengthening environmental sustainability efforts and promoting the principles of sustainable development in line with Egypt Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research.

El-Nomany emphasized that the university has achieved remarkable accomplishments in this international ranking over recent years, maintaining its advanced position among Egyptian and African universities. The university has also secured first place in Africa and Egypt in the Infrastructure category for several consecutive years, reflecting its commitment to implementing sustainability standards across various sectors.

Dr. Khaled Omran, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, explained that the university has already started early preparations for participation in the ranking, particularly after the ranking administration announced that the submission deadline had been moved forward to June 30, 2026. He noted that the university aims to achieve even more distinguished results this year by enhancing work mechanisms and expanding the documentation of sustainable activities and practices. He added that the first preparatory meeting of the team responsible for preparing the university’s submission file had been held to discuss the work plan, distribute tasks among different teams, and review the latest updates to the ranking criteria. These criteria include seven main categories: Infrastructure and Facilities, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Sustainable Transportation, Education and Research, and Governance and Digital Transformation.

 

For her part, Dr. Asmaa Mahmoud Kadry, Director of the Sustainable Development Center, stated that the center is currently working on collecting and monitoring evidence and data from all sectors and faculties, in addition to developing sustainability-related digital content and strengthening the documentation of activities and initiatives implemented by the university in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development.

After achieving first place in Africa and Egypt, Sohag University holds its first preparatory meeting in preparation for participating in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities.
